The health information technician is the professional responsible for maintaining components of health information systems consistent with the medical, administrative, ethical, legal, accreditation and regulatory requirements. In all types of facilities, the health information technician possesses the knowledge and skills necessary to process, maintain, compile and report health information data for reimbursement, facility planning, marketing, risk management, utilization management, quality assessment and research; to abstract and code clinical data; and to analyze health records. The health information technician may be responsible for functional supervision.

The Health Information Technology Program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) and the Council on Accreditation of the American Health Information Management Association. Successful completion of this program allows graduates to sit for the Registered health Information Technician (RHIT) examination. The curriculum includes laboratory and clinical practices which provide a transition from theory to practice. Additional expenses are associated with clinical practice courses.
