Senator Hutichison Secures $500,000 for El Paso Area Projects

August 11, 2009

WASHINGTON - U.S. Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-TX), a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, today announced that the committee has approved the Fiscal Year 2010 Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies Appropriations bill. The measure includes $400,000 that she secured for the Texas Tech University HealthSciences Center at El Paso and $100,000 for Project ARRIBA. The bill is now ready to be considered by the full Senate.

"The TexasTech HealthSciences Center is an outstanding institution and a leader in the El Paso medical community," Senator Hutchison said. "This funding for the Center for Border Health will support research to keep Americans safe from diseases that are prevalent in border communities."

The Center for Border Health at the Texas Tech University HealthSciences Center at El Paso will use the funding to research new and re-emerging infectious diseases, as well as providing research opportunities for diabetes, cancer, and traumatic brain injuries.

"Project ARRIBA is such an important endeavor for those who are living in poverty in the El Paso community," Senator Hutchison said. "This funding to Project ARRIBA will help open doors for these unemployed individuals, giving them broader access to economic and social opportunities."

Funding to Project ARRIBA will use the funding to work with community partners in El Paso to create relevant training programs for individuals living in poverty and foster social and economic opportunities.
